Why Korra’s visiting so many places

fourth-chakra:

Since the trailer came out I’ve been trying to figure out why Korra’s going to so many places we’ve seen before and after a while I think I have a decent theory.

Korra’s still struggling to recover from her ordeal with Zaheer and the Red Lotus, that’s evident through her nightmares, physical state, and visions (and also the fact that three years later she’s still haunted by her mercury avatar state self (question mark)). I think that at this point she’s just trying to find some inner peace. So what does she do? She cuts her hair and goes off on her own to do some soul searching. But how does she start? By following the footsteps of the gaang.

For them, everything started at the Southern Water Tribe. The greatest turning point in Sokka’s and Katara’s lives was when Aang popped out of the iceberg. For Korra, one of the greatest turning points in her life was when she opened the southern spirit portal. She seems to be in Earth Kingdom clothing which makes me believe that she started her spiritual journey from the Earth Kingdom here instead of running away from home while she was staying there recovering. Perhaps Korra is here reflecting on the choices she’s made while being the avatar and whether they’ve been for the better.

The next place the gaang went to was the earth kingdom.

In the swamp they faced ghosts of their past and future. We know that Korra sees herself in the Avatar state here and fights this manifestation. She also has hallucinations of drowning in the poison the Red Lotus used on her. In the Swamp she’s fighting her past fears and trying to overcome them.

In the second half of book 2 the gaang went to the Si Wong desert.

When they were stranded they felt helpless and alone. This isn’t a new feeling for Korra and here, as part of her spiritual journey, she tries to cope with her feeling of isolation.

Finally the gaang visited the fire nation.

The only places that we’ve seen that have volcanoes were in the Fire Nation: the island with Roku’s temple on it, the island where Roku lived with his family (and the surrounding islands), and the island Aang washed up on in the Awakening. At each of those islands the avatar dealt with their power and often with the avatar state. Here I believe Korra is trying to find balance with her worldly self and the power that was given to her as the avatar if that is Korra there.

I’m not saying this all happens the way I’ve put it here but this is how I can logically think of why she would be visiting these places other than in search of guidance.
